Nhu cầu xăng dầu Mỹ giảm khi giá tăng cao

MasterCard Advisors cảnh báo, giá xăng Ä‘ang tiến đến mức nhu cầu nhiên liệu ở Mỹ sẽ giảm mạnh.

Theo Ä‘ó, số liệu hàng tuần từ MasterCard cho thấy, tuần trÆ°á»›c, nhu cầu Ä‘ã giảm 1.6% so vá»›i mức năm ngoái, sau khi giá bán lẻ Ä‘ã tăng hÆ¡n 1/3 kể từ năm trÆ°á»›c lên trên mức 3.8 USD/gallon.

Hiện tại, thời tiết Ä‘ã bắt đầu ấm lên và mùa nghỉ lá»… Phục sinh Ä‘ang tá»›i lẽ ra sẽ kích thích nhu cầu Ä‘i lại, kéo theo nhu cầu xăng dầu tăng lên so vá»›i tuần trÆ°á»›c. Tuy nhiên, mức này vẫn thấp hÆ¡n so vá»›i cùng kỳ năm trÆ°á»›c.

John Gamel, giám đốc viện phân tích kinh tế tập Ä‘oàn MasterCard Advisors Spending Pulse, trên cÆ¡ sở số liệu giao dịch cho biết: “Hàng ngày, người dân vẫn phải lái xe Ä‘Æ°a con đến trường, vẫn phải Ä‘i làm việc, tuy nhiên, về cÆ¡ bản hầu hết họ đều cắt giảm các kế hoạch du lịch vào má»—i cuối tuần,”

Tuy nhiên, nếu nhÆ° năm 2008, xăng tăng giá vá»›i mức Ä‘á»™ tÆ°Æ¡ng tá»± làm tình hình tệ hại bởi họ Ä‘ang chuẩn bị rÆ¡i vào khủng hoảng kinh tế thì hiện giờ, người dân có vẻ linh Ä‘á»™ng hÆ¡n khi nền kinh tế ít nhiều Ä‘ang trong giai Ä‘oạn phục hồi.

Hiệu quả nhiên liệu trung bình của phÆ°Æ¡ng tiện cÆ¡ giá»›i Mỹ Ä‘ã cải thiện Ä‘áng kể trong những năm gần Ä‘ây khi người dân Ä‘ang tìm cách đối phó vá»›i giá xăng tăng cao.

“Nhu cầu Ä‘ã giảm khá mạnh khi xăng dao Ä‘á»™ng quanh mức 3.50 USD/gallon hồi trÆ°á»›c. Tuy nhiên, do hiện tại nền kinh tế Ä‘ang phát triển chậm, cÅ©ng nhÆ° người tiêu Ä‘ùng Ä‘ã từng kinh qua các giai Ä‘oạn giá leo thang cao hÆ¡n thế, nên mức giá khiến nhu cầu giảm sẽ cao hÆ¡n trong năm nay. Chúng ta dá»± tính, mức này sẽ vào khoảng 4 USD/gallon,”

Thông tin từ MasterCard cho biết, tuần trÆ°á»›c, giá xăng trung bình tại quốc gia tiêu thụ dầu mỏ lá»›n nhất thế giá»›i ở mức 3.81 USD, tăng 9.00% so vá»›i tuần trÆ°á»›c Ä‘ó, tăng 33.7% so vá»›i 1 năm trÆ°á»›c.

Trong vòng 4 tuần qua, lượng tiêu thụ xăng tại Mỹ Ä‘ã giảm 2.1% so vá»›i năm trÆ°á»›c. Tuy nhiên, nhu cầu lại tăng 3.3 % so vá»›i tuần trÆ°á»›c Ä‘ó, do thời tiết và kỳ nghỉ lá»… Phục sinh và lượng xăng mua vào đạt ká»· lục cao nhất từ đầu năm nay.

Số liệu từ Cục Thông tin Năng lượng Mỹ cÅ©ng cho thấy, mùa nhu cầu nhiên liệu cÅ©ng Ä‘ã bắt đầu. Tuần trÆ°á»›c, má»—i ngày có khoảng 9.18 triệu thùng xăng thành phẩm được cung cấp vào thị trường Mỹ, tăng 328,000 thùng/ngày so vá»›i tuần trÆ°á»›c Ä‘ó.

US gasoline demand falls as prices rise

Gasoline prices are getting close to levels where demand from American consumers is likely to fall sharply, MasterCard Advisors warned.

Demand last week dropped 1.6 per cent from year-ago levels, after retail prices climbed more than a third from a year earlier to more than $3.80 a gallon, MasterCard’s weekly data showed.

The year-on-year decline came even as warmer weather and the upcoming Easter holiday encouraged more driving, which did boost gasoline demand from the previous week.

Demand is seen slowing over weekends in particular as Americans cut discretionary driving.

“People still have to drive their kids to school, they have to go to work but we’re seeing cutbacks primarily in shopping trips and as people decide not to take that weekend trip,” said John Gamel, director of economic analysis for MasterCard Advisors SpendingPulse, which uses purchase data to determine national demand.

However, motorists are more resilient than they were the last time gasoline prices surged in 2008 because the economy, then heading into a financial crisis, is now along a path to modest recovery.

Average fuel efficiency of US vehicles has also improved in recent years as motorists seek to avert higher gasoline prices.

“We saw sharp demand declines around $3.50 a gallon before. But because the economy is improving ever so slightly now and because consumers have already experienced those higher levels before, the threshold at which point demand will drop is higher this year. We expect that around $4 a gallon,” Gamel said.

A gallon of gasoline sold for $3.81 on average last week in the world’s biggest oil-consuming country, up 9.00 cents week-on-week and 33.7 per cent from a year ago, according to MasterCard. That was the first time prices were higher than $3.80 since September 2008.

Over the latest four weeks, US gasoline consumption has fallen 2.1 per cent from year-ago levels. Still, demand rose 3.3 per cent from the previous week, buoyed by the weather and the upcoming Easter holiday and drivers pumped the largest weekly volume since the start of this year, MasterCard said.

Data from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA) also showed this seasonal bump in demand. About 9.18 million barrels per day of finished motor gasoline were supplied to the US market last week, up 328,000 bpd from the previous week, according to the EIA.
